Unexpected Guest

From the time we are very young and conscious of our existence in this world we are aware of our environment; everything is new, calling out to us to explore and discover.

However, as we grow older and some say more jaded; our awareness changes.  We become desensitized.  Accepting only what society says is normal as being normal and continuing our travels on the path of life we have chosen to follow.  We remain steadfastly focused on our individual goals and dreams choosing to allow other things, not in our plan, to fall away.

Many of you reading this may have children.  Think back to when they were very young, to when they were three or four years old.  Remember how they could play by themselves for hours on end with their toys?  Now think really hard.  How many of you had children who had imaginary playmates and earnestly interacted with them?  For most children, these imaginary friends were just that; imaginary.  However there are some children whose imaginary friends are very real and in most cases friendly.

Looking back and honestly evaluating my experiences as a paranormal investigator.  I would say that it’s reasonable to estimate that roughly two percent of the children involved in the cases I’ve personally investigated displayed a real knowledge of the entity or entities in the haunting.  Some of these children could give you the name of the entity and describe to you what he, she or they looked like.  It’s important to note here that many of the entities are reported as being dark or shadow like.

When I was growing up in a small town in Massachusetts my family purchased a Victorian “window rattler”.  I was five or six when we moved in.  Everything was fine in the home until my dad started doing renovations to the house.  The house had the original weighted sash windows, ancient turn of the century oil furnace and a round stone foundation that was desperately in need of pointing.

My first recollection of anything strange going on was that my closet door would just pop open about six inches.  Interestingly enough, later on in life I would find out that the same thing was occurring in my younger sisters’ room.  Our closets were back to back separated only by the horse-hair plaster wall.  While I was afraid and had the distinct feeling of being watched, I would get up, close the door again and pull on the handle to ensure the door was secure.  Eventually I would fall asleep and awake in the morning only to find the door open again.  My sister however was so frightened that she would go to my parents’ bedroom and sleep on the floor next to their bed.

Other manifestations would occur.  My sister would hear footsteps coming up the stairs and stopping before her room door and on one occasion she claims to have been held down in her bed.  She couldn’t move; nothing else happened she just couldn’t move.  The previous incidents occurred over a five to seven year period.

Things got really interesting when my sister and I were in our teen years.  The manifestations actually started becoming noticed by our parents.  My mother would hear footsteps on a regular basis going up the attic stairs and a noticeable swishing sound of crinoline from an old dress.  My father, while working in my sisters room installing new baseboard radiators, had the entire contents of my sisters closet jettisoned from the closet across her room about 12 feet.  As usual, our closet doors continued to open as well.

By now you’re probably wondering why we didn’t move out of that house.  Well, the truth of the matter is that no one was saying anything to anyone about what they were experiencing.  My mom told my dad about the footsteps and swishing noise she had been hearing but he just laughed it off as her imagination.  My sister and I never revealed what was going on with us because we thought mom and dad would think we were crazy.  Oh yeah, remember the closet incident in my sisters room?  My dad blamed my sister for not putting her things away properly in her closet.

The grand revelation of all these occurrences was over a Thanksgiving dinner at my parents’ new home roughly 10 years ago.  I had cautiously revealed to my family that I was involved in paranormal investigations and was telling them about a case that was not classified as confidential.  Then my mom brought up “The old house”.  We all shared our experiences and as we all feared; my dad thought we were nuts.

What I want to stress here is that if there is something going on in your home you have to talk about it!  If you don’t, whatever is going on will continue to grow in strength and propagate.  Sometimes kids are more aware of what’s going on more so than the parents!  Listen to them!  Take a step back and logically look at the situation, try that door knob and give it a good wiggle and a swift kick to see if the door pops open.

In closing, the “old house” has been bought and sold three times now since my family owned it and with the exception of the current owners, all the previous occupants of that property at some time approached my parents and voiced their displeasure about how they weren’t notified that there were “unexpected guests”!

Many people who are paranormal investigators had experiences like yours when they were growing up. There also always seems to be one parent who is firmly in denial of the activity. In my case, it was my mother. When I was eight years old, I woke up one night and there was a lady standing next to my bed. She was strangely dressed and I didn’t recognize her. I wasn’t scared because she was just standing there looking out the window. I couldn’t see her face or feet, but her torso and hands were clearly visible. I eventually fell back to sleep and asked my mother and sister if they had been in my room and they both said no. My dad suggested that it had been a ghost, but my mother insisted I had been dreaming when I KNEW I was awake!

My father had seen two men standing at the foot of his bed one night. He asked them who they were and “they went up in smoke, like I Dream of Jeannie!”. He also had awoke another night to one of the men standing right next to the head of his bed. My dad turned on the bedside light and no one was there! I had friends over that had experiences of seeing footprints or hearing footsteps on the living room carpet. It was kind of squishy and made a crinkly sound when you walked on it. That never failed to freak them out. We also had items that would disappear and no matter how hard we looked, we couldn’t find them. They would later appear in the exact spot where we originally left them and had repeatedly looked!

The house has been sold twice. First by my parents, then the people that they sold it to. I recently visited the place and barely recognized the interior except for the original upstairs hallway where our bedrooms and bathroom was. I didn’t mention the “G word” to the current owners, but the lady mentioned that she didn’t like being in the basement! I also recently found out that my house was haunted due to there being a portal in my bedroom. I noticed when I visited that there wasn’t anyone using that room. It was just for storage.

Ok, I have tried to figure out how to post a new topic and I am runing into dead ends. I had dated a guy two years ago that claimed to see horrible things. Well I was geocaching this past week and took some pics down at the Pumping Station in Greenfield and the Montague Plains in Montague. I seem to be picking up scarey things on film. Twice. I was wondering if anyone had time to comment. Because I am not sure how this site works yet, here is a link to the pics.

    Thanks for posting BluOct08.

WordPress can be tricky. Once you log in to the site there’s a quick post feature on your Dashboard page, should be on the upper right side. You can generate new posts there.

In the meantime, thank you for the links and I’ll check out the photos. I’m curious, are you using a digital camera or a 35mm camera? In any event, whenever you take images on 35mm you should note what frame on the roll the photo is and any aperature and f-stop settings as well as any filters used. For digital imaging you can do the same, obviously without the ‘frame’ reference.

Interesting photos, I’d like to see the negatives if they’re 35mm. The pumpstation image is very interesting. The shot under the bridge is interesting as well but I’d like to see the actual location to rule out flash-bounce from the waters surface.

Digital camera. I want to go back and try again but another reader told me that I could be playing with fire and I am not sure what that means. The Eunice Williams Bridge in off Leyden Rd, in Greenfield, MA.
We went back and tried ruling things out and for the most part was able to do so. But the face under the bridge is not explainable and it seems so detailed. I have a few other pics that were taken after the one posted and the face changes angle, slighty. If it were a face, do you think that it knew we were there taking pics? It isn’t like these things jump out and are craving to be photographed. I do not want any bad happenings, so I am just wondering if the other reader is correct, I may be playing with fire.

Hmmm…Playing with fire? I don’t know about that. Has anything negative happened to you? You may want to read my post on Attachments.

If you really want to know grab a meter and digital recorder, go back to the bridge and do another shoot with them running! See if you get anything! :)

Would a camcorder with the lens cover on work?
I am heading off to read that article. :)
